The Voice of Atlas is where stories of strength, vision, and transformation come to life — and in the world of global logistics, few voices resonate as powerfully as Philu Pereira’s. From her early days navigating a male-dominated industry in India to founding Grace Global Logistics, she has not only led with innovation and integrity but also paved the way for countless women to rise in logistics. Her story is one of grit, growth, and global impact — a true testament to what leadership looks like when it’s driven by both heart and strategy.

How did you first get interested in logistics, and what keeps you motivated in this field?

My journey into logistics began after completing a Secretarial Course at YWCA in 1973 and earning my Graduation in 1978. I started working at a small Custom Brokerage firm, where my fluency in English, strong correspondence skills, and deep passion for work helped me contribute significantly to the company’s growth. Over time, we expanded by launching a Transport Division, then Freight Forwarding, securing a Multimodal Transport License from the Director General of Shipping, and obtaining customs approval for our warehouse operations—pioneering initiatives at the time.
Holding a top position allowed me to collaborate with custom officials and government bodies, while extensively traveling across India to meet clients. A major milestone came in 1989, when I qualified for the Custom Broker Examinations conducted by Indian Customs, earning my Custom Broker License—potentially making me one of the first women in India to achieve this distinction.
After 35 years at a single company, I embarked on a new chapter, founding P. V. Agencies Freight Forwarders Pvt. Ltd., specializing in Customs and Freight Brokerage. This was followed by establishing my own Transportation Company, deploying self-owned container trailers for efficient cargo movement. In 2003, I launched Grace Global Logistics Pvt. Ltd., a Multimodal Transport Operator with an FMC-approved Bill of Lading, securing long-term buyers consolidation business with partners in the United States and Canada, whom we have proudly continue to serve for over 25 years.
I take pride in mentioning that I am one of the Investor/Director of a Container Freight Station situated in Panvel (Maharashtra) Ashte Logistics Pvt. Ltd.
Logistics has always been seen as a male-dominated industry, especially in India, where on-site visits were integral to operations. However, my deep understanding of the business, confidence, and motivation allowed me to overcome stereotypes and succeed. The ever-evolving nature of logistics and the endless opportunities to innovate and solve challenges keep me passionate and driven in this field.

What do you wish someone had told you before you started in logistics?

I’m grateful that an acquaintance introduced me to a logistics company, and my employer—an exceptionally dynamic and risk-taking individual—who became a key influence in shaping my skills. My natural energy and enthusiasm have helped me embrace every moment, making the journey exciting despite its challenges. Logistics is a demanding field, but it offers incredible opportunities to stay well-connected.
For those starting out I will say – Logistics is full of moments where strategy and perseverance come together. Whether it’s overcoming unexpected hurdles, coordinating intricate supply chains, or making last-minute pivots to ensure smooth deliveries, logistics thrives on adaptability and sharp problem-solving. It’s a field where every challenge presents an opportunity to innovate, connect industries, and keep the world running seamlessly.

What valuable life lessons have your experience in logistics taught you?

Passion fuels perseverance: A strong drive for what you do keeps you moving forward, even when obstacles arise.
Hard work and curiosity open doors: Staying committed and constantly seeking knowledge keeps you ahead in a fast-paced environment.
Networking is invaluable: Relationships built over time can be game changers, providing support, opportunities, and collaboration.
Adaptability is key: Logistics teaches you to think on your feet. Challenges are inevitable, but a calm, solution-oriented mindset makes all the difference.
Continuous growth leads to success: The industry demands learning, re-learning, and evolving, ensuring that there’s never a dull moment.

What do you see as the biggest challenge in logistics today, and how do you think the industry is handling it?

The logistics industry faces several challenges today. Geopolitics is no longer just a military concern—it extends to trade wars and international hostility, impacting steady industry growth. The sector is also undergoing a digital revolution, where technology is progressively replacing manual processes. From start to finish, operations are becoming fully digitized.
The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated this transformation, teaching invaluable lessons. In India, tasks like collecting Delivery Orders once required physical visits to shipping lines, and payments were made through Pay Orders. However, these processes have now been streamlined through digital platforms, enabling electronic transactions and electronic access to Bills of Lading.
Customer expectations have also evolved, demanding greater cargo visibility and real-time tracking. To survive in the logistics industry, companies must invest in digitization and technology. Warehousing adds immense value, and success will depend on offering a comprehensive range of services. Industry players must identify strategic partners and collaborate to share resources effectively.

If you could change one thing about the logistics industry, what would it be and what impact do you think it would have?

If I could change one thing about the logistics industry, it would be accelerating the adoption of advanced digital technology across all sectors.
The impact would be transformative—streamlining operations, reducing inefficiencies, and improving transparency. Digitization would eliminate outdated manual processes, ensuring faster transactions, real-time cargo visibility, and seamless coordination between stakeholders. Automation and AI could optimize supply chains, predict disruptions, and improve resource management. Additionally, better digital connectivity would enhance collaboration, allowing logistics companies to share resources and strengthen partnerships across industries.
This shift wouldn’t just boost efficiency; it would future proof the industry against geopolitical uncertainties and evolving customer expectations. Companies that embrace technology will gain a competitive edge, while those slow to adapt may struggle to survive in an increasingly digital world.
I do recognise that like us – other Small and medium-sized logistics companies often face financial constraints when adopting advanced digital technology. There are several strategies they can use to manage costs effectively – which probably will be a discussion for another day.

What’s one thing you enjoy most about being a member of this community?

One of the most rewarding aspects of being in the logistics industry is the strong network it fosters. Industry players are well-connected through various associations, working collaboratively to drive progress. Regular conferences and exhibitions provide platforms to share insights and explore new developments. Additionally, being a member of international networks like Atlas Network for nearly 20 years has allowed us to engage with global partners, expanding our reach and staying connected with the world.

When you’re not focused on logistics, how do you like to unwind and enjoy your free time?

I have worked hard to balance my professional achievements with my personal connections. Staying close to my family and visiting my grandkids in Australia every year brings me immense joy.
Throughout my career, I have been actively involved in the logistics industry, serving as a committee member of the Indian Custom Broker Association and the Federation of Freight Forwarders. I am proud to have been part of the first Women Executive Committee in India. As Convenor and now Mentor of the Women’s Wing, I have dedicated myself to supporting and empowering women in logistics.

Logistics Women Leader of the Year

Recently, my efforts were recognized at the Cargo Insights Award Function, where I was honoured as Logistics Women Leader of the Year—a truly meaningful acknowledgment of my journey and contributions to the industry. Receiving this award was an unforgettable moment.

What’s one thing your colleagues would be surprised to learn about you?

I find great fulfilment in sharing and teaching the Roman Catholic faith. Guiding others on their spiritual journey requires wisdom, patience, and a deep connection to my beliefs. Being involved in my Church allows me to make a meaningful impact, helping others grow in their understanding and relationship with God. What I enjoy most is witnessing the transformation in those I teach—their deepening faith, their questions, and their eagerness to embrace Catholic teachings. Every moment spent nurturing their spiritual growth strengthens my own faith as well.

Thank you, Philu, for sharing your remarkable journey with us. Your story is not only a powerful reflection of resilience and leadership in the logistics industry, but also an inspiring example of how one woman’s vision can open doors for many others.
